McManus Galleries and Museum is a splendid Gothic Revival-style building housing Dundee's main collection. McManus' current displays offer a fascinating insight into Dundee's colourful past, through exhibitions of Art, History and the Environment.
The Challenge.
As part of the largest renovation project in its 138 year history, Metalrax Storage were appointed to install a mobile storage system to store the museum’s extensive collection of artefacts.
The complete scheme involved emptying the current museum at the McManus Galleries into an existing building less than half a mile away. This will now be the permanent home of the Social History and Natural History collections. The Art, Statues and Porcelain collections will be temporarily stored here before being returned to the McManus Gallery after the refurbishment is completed.
The Solution.
Metalrax Storage created an internal project team to monitor the progress of the project from the initial proposal to the commissioning of the finished installation. A comprehensive audit was conducted and each artefact was allocated a space within the shelving bays. Because of the great diversity of the McManus’s collections, standard bay elevations were adapted to ensure that artefacts were stored efficiently and safely.
Slide-out drawer units and cabinets chosen to accommodate small items including Insects, Mammal and Bird Skins, Coins and Medals. Rolls of material, a Costume collection and Flags were supported off specially designed hanging rails. Outsize and fragile items including Pianos, a Kayak and even a Blue Shark were all allocated space within the mobile shelving bays.
The successful conclusion of this unique project was due to an understanding of the museum’s long-term aims, the close working relationship between the client and supplier and the suitability and quality of the storage solution.
